I planned for a motherboard replacement sometime in 2012, in 2008 I correctly predicted that the LGA 1366 would be kinda dead by next year, and the motherboards, CPUs should come don quite a bit. Guess what? with cheaper LGA 1155 & the new LGA 2011 the 1366's are dead. But becasue I've been too busy to keep up with the times and stores apparently were quick to quit stocking LGA 1366 mobos, I need to find the best one before they're out of stock forever! So what's the best LGA 1366 motherboard? Please don't say the EVGA Classified SR-2. That won't fit in my case, a Corsair 800D. also while Core i7's have come down in price, the Xeon processors are still $ 1k a piece. (but that doesn't mean I don't dream of having that) exclude anything above $ 500 thanks something that's extremely well made, has a good warranty, 6 slots DDR3 1833 or faster, can do at least two SLI graphics at 16X, components run cool. in stock or not, as long as it was popular I'll find it sooner or later. Retail processor prices won't drop considerably, if at all. The prices you see them sold at ($ 300, $ 600, $ 1000) are pretty much what the retailers pay, there isn't 50% markup on them to where they can slowly price them down to $ 200, $ 300, $ 500 for example. They sell them for tiny profit to get customers to shop for whole systems there, they aren't going to clear inventory in a soon to be discontinued but still in demand part. You should ask yourself if you really need the features of an LGA 1366 board over those in an LGA 1155 one. With Ivy Bridge coming in Q2 2012 $ 500 for a CPU and board will out perform any single LGA 1366 CPU available - yes even the 6-cores. Okay so you are limited to only two graphics cards, but are you going to be affected in any other way than that? Are you going to be limited with only 4 DIMM slots supporting 32GB over 6 supporting 48GB? Do you need more than 16GB of memory even? I'd strongly advise against buying LGA 1366 components, if you had an LGA 1366 system then I'd say upgrade the processor to a Core i7 980, it's a great upgrade for a quad box and the benefits of sandy bridge and soon ivy bridge aren't huge, but to buy in to it now is not a good move. Personally there is one reason that would kill the whole idea for me: what happens if my board breaks after the 1 year warranty period? I'd rather spend $ 100 on an okay LGA 1155 board and $ 200 on the top Core i5 and not worry about it. People aren't choosing LGA 1155 systems because they are just cheaper, they outclassed LGA 1366 for nearly everyone since their introduction.
