Question by : RAM GB vs MHz what is more usefull for top end overclocked laptops? OK I’ve been searching and most answers on this are generic and opinion based. As a back story, I make plenty of money as I always work. I use my computer for everything from paperwork to gamming on max resolution to video and music creation and editing. I even do some 3d rendering. I’m going to spend a butt load of cash on a laptop when ivy bridge comes out or possibly even now and get a trade in deal from the would be sandy to the ivy. That said, I’m between an ungodly amount of 1333MHz ram (32GB), a still over killing amount of 1600MHz ram (16GB), or just strong amount of 1866MHz ram (8GB). I know all of the, “you won’t use it” jargon and the, “just get a desk top” stuff but the reality is I live on the road and it’s possible for me to be doing work on CAD for work while I have a 3D model rendering for side job and streaming games and music all at once. That all said, directed at not your average users or gamers but the top end power hungry overclockers t hat don’t care about price and just want as much raw power as they can get, what is going to give me the fastest performance ram wise all around on a lap top, MHz, GB’s, or a middle of both? Just assume optimized everything else but just to head off a couple of trolls let’s assume i7 extreme chip over clocked and top GHz rating available as a base ( I’ll figure what too latter) and windows 7 ultimate just cus it’s ez and it can take 32GB of ram. That’s not all set in stone as I don’t know what ivy will bring but it works for now. Just explain what about the ram gives me what benefits vs the other aspects. Just saying I like so and so doesn’t help me. I’m looking for a mad geniuses expertise here =D Thank you in advance. If you need more info just fill in the blanks with what you would use there for best performance and post that too as my whole build is theoretical until either ivy comes out or my work laptops lame i5ness drives me mad =b And again don’t even mention price, I don’t care I’m just looking for the fastest lap top available. If it’s a little better for a lot of money that’s fine. If for some reason something is an overkill due to system restrictions and not usual user amount stuff then that’s fine pleas detail that. Aka win 7 can take 32 but underuse’s it (not sure if this is true, I just said it as an example, I think it can use the 32 to my knowledge in ultimate edition). I’m not up on all the new stuff as of the last 4 years completely yet. Well sunil just posted minimum stats for something for no apparent reason… ya kinda non sequitur yo. But Exla was kinda helpful. I was actually thinking of goin with 2 GTX 580M’s scalable link interfaced cus I do do quite a bit of graphic intensive gaming, (the more polygon’s the better) but I’ll definitely look into the others you were mentioning cus that sounds promising too for my other uses. I’ll have to do some comparisons and weigh my options. As for the VS debit. I think the real nucleus of my question would be, In terms of just the RAM what am I getting with more MHz (speed) vs GB (Amount). The rest of my build was just given as a little background cus I see a lot of posts like mine that never get answered due to people going off on “well it all depends yada yada yada” or “I need to know what you’re leaving out Bla Bla Bla”. I am an electronic technician but I work with equipment much larger than pc’s, actually much larger than most apartment com plexes to be honest so I never d The choice I’m facing at the moment in my build is a little fast ram, more slower ram, or a ton of even slower ram. The stats are posted in my first post. Best answer for RAM GB vs MHz what is more usefull for top end overclocked laptops?:

You know what I like about you? 3 things: You ask an informed question, not just something you could google. You have good grammar. You seem to know what you're talking about. I'll be glad to help here. First, let me clarify some things. From what I read, your primary task is 3D modelling/CAD work, with a few things running in the backround. This multitasking is mainly going to be handled by a processor. In theory, a quad core processor will be best at handling 3 things at once, a dual core 2 things, etc. The speed at which the CPU handles this multitasking is Gigahertz (GHz). If you have a laptop processor, overclocking (which refers to manually increasing GHz) is NOT a good idea. You should be fine with a 2.5-ish GHz i7. RAM (Random Access Memory) is not so important for gamers, but for CAD it is important. The amount of RAM you get will have an affect on performance (to a point). If you get 32 GB, you will be futureproof for a long time. At this point in time, 16 GB is the most anyone would ever need, despite what some people say, but there is nothing wrong with having more so you don't have to upgrade later (10 years ago, 256 MEGAbytes of RAM was the shiz, so imagine where will be in the 2020's). The main thing you'll want to worry about while CADding on a laptop is the graphics hardware. Most mainstream cards are either HD xxxx or GTX xxx, from ATI and nVidia, respectfully. For a computer modeller, you'll want an nVidia card, but NOT the GTX (GeForce) lineup. You're going to want Quadro graphics, which are awesome for 3D modelling, but not so much for games. You can get an idea for what kind of Quadro card is right for you at nvidia.com. So to recap, 32GB is futureproof but not required, you'll want a high GHz processor, and a quadro chip. Hope that helped.
