Gone are the days when computers cost millions and occupied a lot of space; these days, they can fit into your purse, and anyone can afford one as the cost has gone way down. A state of the art computer configuration will not break the bank and if you do not mind slightly used ones, the cost can go down even further as there are plenty of people who want the very latest gadgets and dispose of last year's models at throwaway prices. This easy availability and affordability, coupled with the versatility of applications that computers can be used for, are fast making them our gateway to the world.
At home
Computers turn on our air-conditioning, lights and our security systems. They can let you know whether the knock on the door came from a pesky salesman or your hot date. They help you keep your finances up to date, help with homework, and keep in touch with friends and relatives if you also happen to be connected to the Internet. It is so muc h easier nowadays to do things like search for that recipe online rather than look it up in a recipe book.
At work
Computers run our lives at the workplace - if you do not think it is true, just think what would happen if all the computers at your workplace conked out at once. Unless you are stuck in a time warp in the seventies, your work is bound to be affected a great deal. We tend to take their presence for granted and realize how pervasive they are only when computers fail.
For leisure and learning
Computers have become our best friends - we turn to them when we need to pass time, when we need comfort, we use them to connect to other human beings and for those inclined to do so, create virtual alter egos when online. Search engines have become the favorite tools of people wanting to access the vast stores of information available online. It is now at the point we have stopped using the printed word and look for electronic versions of reading material because it is all so convenient and portable. It is possible for your hard disk to contain the entire contents of a library, so why bother to buy or tote around books?
This is just a small glimpse of how computers have inched their way into our lives; and for the most part, it has been a mixed blessing. The benefits are enormous, and the disadvantages are just becoming apparent as we see the behavior of impressionable young minds change under their influence. Today, the pervasiveness of computers and the effect that they have on our lives in terms of both social interaction and work is a matter of wide and continuing debate. The last words are yet to be said, and until then, we will probably be curling up with our computers instead of with a good book.

It's small form factor, costs $ 100+ more anywhere else, has 6gigs of ram, can upgrade to 8gigs, 1TB hard drive, an Intel GMA built in (plus a free PCI-Express port for whenever I want to upgrade), a built in TV-tuner, and an Intel Pentium E6700 processor. To me, that is all awesome, the only slight negative is the processor. For those who aren't up to speed, Intel is abandoning the "Core 2 Duo"-ish confusing processor names and going with 5 simply-named classes: Celeron, Pentium, i3, i5, i7. The Pentiums, as far as I can tell, are comparable to the "Core 2 Duo" style processors from the past couple years... Only 45nm lithography though which is nice. 3.2 ghz for this edition, it's the more "high-end" of the Pentiums. 2MB cache. It's even on the same G43 chipset as the higher-end 2-core processors of the past couple years, so in essence, it is one of those processors. So it seems ok, but the i3/i5/i7 processors look very very nice. They seem to blow everything else out of the water. The i3's are only 2 cores but they come with some new technology that really seems to speed them up compared to the old stuff. So anyway, I'm getting everything I could possibly want here, except I worry about the processor. Since Intel is moving onto different chipsets with these i3/5/7s, I'm not really going to be able to upgrade in the future. Even looking at Intel's website marketing, it seems like these Pentiums will be fazed out eventually and it will be all i3/5/7 in the future. HOWEVER, the price is still ridiculous. AND I live in a city with a MicroCenter so I can pick it up at my leisure, no shipping headaches. Can you find what is in your opinion a better deal for a comparable price? Let's say, $ 560 or less. I don't like this particular until for several reasons. Primarily because the power supply is extremely proprietary and expensive to replace, hard to find locally and inconvenient. This unit is also susceptible to heat issues due to its small size. The unit is also limited in upgrade choices when upgrading your hardware with the exception of ram and hard drive. I would recommend an ASUS over this unit. You can find one at your local best buy for around $ 500. Gateway is the same manufacturer as Acer and Emachines and therefore I am put off by them from the get go no matter what's inside the box. You get what you pay for. Asus is a highly regarded component and system manufacturer with excellent customer service.
