When it comes to buying computer speakers, there are lots of choices available. Not only the price range is huge - from as cheap as $ 10 to hundreds of dollars - there also are several configurations, such as 2.0, 2.1, 5.1 and 7.1. How to choose the best computer speakers from all this variety?

First, you should decide on your needs and budget. Keep in mind the space you have available as well. Simple 2.0 audio systems consist of two speakers and take up the least space. They're ideal if you don't have a lot of space on your desk, but still want to listen to music or watch a movie without spending a lot of money on expensive audio equipment. That isn't to say that 2.0 produce low quality sound, however. There are lots of good 2.0 systems out there, such as Creative GigaWorks. Keep in mind that you can also get quality headphones for the price of a 2.0 set.

2.1 is a step up from the 2.0 sound system. It consists of two satellite speakers and a subwoofer. Na turally, this kind of audio setup packs more punch and is capable of producing deeper and more powerful bass. The subwoofer unit is usually pretty large, but it doesn't necessarily have to take up a lot of space since you can simply place it under your desk (direction isn't important for low frequency sound).

5.1 is pretty much a standard high quality speaker setup. As you might have guessed, it consists of 5 satellite speakers and a subwoofer. Ideally, the satellites should be positioned around you for the true surround sound experience. However, this setup requires a lot of space and isn't suited for everyone. Alternatively, you can arrange the 5 satellite speakers in front of you, but in that case you might as well get a 2.1 system instead.

7.1 further improves the quality of surround sound by adding two additional rear speakers. Such a setup will give you the ultimate video game and movie experience, although it will cost considerably more as well.

Don' t forget the sound card, either. Modern motherboards have integrated sound chips which will be enough for most people. However, true audiophiles or hardcore games will want to pick up something more serious to go along with their hi-fi speaker system.

if its studio specific workstations you are looking for. which usually have rack spaces, keyboard, monitor mounts. the cheapest way is to build one. you can go with the big name companies, raxxess, etc. , but my boss built one of the same exact models that cost 400 bucks from the company, he built for about 60 bucks, there really are no cheap workstations, and if they are cheap they are made cheaply and will fall apart. the cheapest way is get an old desk and modify it, i know you want a christmas type gift but, if you buy it, it will be really expensive.
