I have never owned a laptop before, and frankly, the reason why is because I have heard so many BAD things about them - especially, when something goes wrong...the lousy warrenties, the cheap builds, the hype cover ups on second rate parts. So I stuck with desktops. But now, I am seriously thinking of getting a laptop and I would like to have your advice. I have heard that Alienware makes the best gamer laptops. But in searching the net, I have run across a few other name brands: Schenker Notebook CLEVO Notebooks Is Alienware really the best? Who owns one here? How about these other ones. Compare the XPS Dell's. Compare HP. How about Gateway, Asus, Acer...etc? Who has the best gamer, the best warranty, the best parts, and so forth? How about your experience with failed parts? How long do they last before they go kaput? I've asked similar questions now and have gotten very few answers. I need more INPUT from all of you, anyone who cares to remark (although, just saying a laptop is great or stinks, just doesn't cut it - WHY, is it great or WHY does it stink?) I am looking at getting a replacement notebook and I'm looking at different models. Alienware is a good gaming laptop;however, the prices are totally through the roof. On Alienwares website when you pick a model that says starting at $ 1499 for example what actually comes in it really sucks. When you build it with good components its actually close or over $ 3000. One model that looks good is the new HP 18.4 inch laptop that comes with 4 GB of RAM and a Intel Core 2 Quad processor Q6000 and a Blu-Ray drive and it's a little over $ 2000. Asus also has some pretty good laptops as well and built for gaming. I love the design of the Asus ones they look sweet. If you prefer Alienwares look into it, but there a little too pricey for whats in them. For the warranties most do suck. Usually what is not covered under the warranties is the battery, screen damage any physical damage, which really sucks. Most warranties differ from companies but that's usually whats not covered.

My advice: if you're looking for a gamer laptop - I'm going to suggest you hit up Widow PC. Solidly built laptops - right down to custom work and they consistently win awards for performance and support year after year. In the old days, Alienware was founded in the garage of a few gamers. They set out with a vision : to build the best gaming desktops out there. And they did. For years gamer life was good. Then they got bought out by Dell. They won't even say who is making their motherboards any more. That says to me in giant red letters "stay away". If they aren't naming their source parts, if they are taking a month to get a power plug to a reviewer of a gaming hardware site - I think the heyday for the company is over. And honestly, that's a shame. They will be sorely missed. The HP/Voodoo marriage is still too new for the jury to be back yet. VooDoo was a great name in gaming hardware - but when the bean counters get involved corners tend to be cut and great brands can get diluted. I can tell you I was looking at the desktops and they aren't built for beans - a 350w external PSU on a gaming machine???? We don't deal in laptops at my gaming hardware company - we do all desktop work. Widow's been around for a long time and winning awards for customer service from gamers is like trying to pull chicken teeth. Crisis and CoD take way more resources than World of Warcraft. A safe bet would be a dual core 2.5+ with 4GB RAM and a 512MB card. That would work passably. A good upgrade would be a 1GB card. Be doubly careful about heat with the bigger vid cards, get an airflow prop. As far as how long they last - largely that's going to be up to you. Heat is the number one killer of all high end computer parts. Laptops don't breathe. You need an external airflow on the underside of the case to help. The screens and the keyboards are generally the next to go. The screen life can vary - as any LCD can on an hour rating. but most screens don't burn out - the cable to the motherboard usually comes loose or breaks long before you exceed the hours on screen life. Keyboards are a relatively cheap and interchangeable part - just don't spill your slurpee over the keyboard. :) In my experience many of the high end Toshibas have had motherboard issues that require them to go back to the factory for replacement MB within 6 months. I avoid them like the plague now. Tough to do because otherwise the build seems solid and the screens are beautiful. I know this doesn't answer all of your questions - many of them are honestly subjective. (Like what's a better warranty - a company that takes months to fix a problem, but covers the warranty for 2 years, or a company that has you back up and running in a few days with only a one year warranty.) Hopefully this points you in a solid direction where you can begin to answer some of your own questions. Just remember, these are the ramblings of a old gaming techie - they're my opinions. Take 'em with a grain of salt - do your own homework and if you have to - make a few phone calls to some prospective companies and ask the hard questions - if you're not satisfied with the answers - move on.
