What should you look for when you are buying a fish oil tablet? If you are a person that normally shops for a low price, you are likely to be disappointed in the results you see from this and other supplements. Price is indicative of quality when it comes to dietary supplements.

You don't have to spend a fortune, but the really low priced supplements are really low quality. You can tell just by reading the nutrient facts on the label. They list the total oils, usually 1000mg. The calories and other required information by law, but they do not list the omega3 content.

In the best supplements, the omega3 content is around 40%, but it can be as low as 10 or 20%. If the omega3 content is not high, there is no point in supplementation. You get enough omega 6s and 9s from your diet.

The label should also indicate the DHA and EPA content of the fish oil tablet. Those are the two most important omega3s. Studies concerning the health benefits of these suppleme nts were conducted using standardized formulas to ensure that DHA and EPA levels were high.

A supplement should provide at least 260mg of DHA and 60mg of EPA. Check to see if the manufacturer lists the highest, the lowest or the average content. The content varies from catch to catch and is higher at certain times of the year. Many manufacturers choose to list the highest possible content, rather than the minimum that will be provided.

All oils should be molecularly distilled. Manufacturers will argue about this, trying to come up with reasons that molecular distillation is a bad thing. Most of them say something about it reducing the omega3 content. There is no reason to believe that this is true.

If a fish oil tablet contains oils that have not been molecularly distilled, they are likely to contain PCBs and mercury. Even fish that swim in the cleanest waters on Earth are likely to contain contaminants because Nature itself can be a source of pollution, no t just Man. (Think of the pollutants spewed out from Volcanos).

Those same manufacturers that say distillation is unnecessary do not display a certificate of analysis. That is a laboratory analysis that shows the level of contaminants in the oils. Manufacturers are not required to obtain or display the certificate, but I would not buy a brand that does not have it. You may be surprised by the immediate benefits that you'll notice with a good fish oil tablet. Just make sure to shop with care.
