In the sea of marketing we all live in, making rational decisions about a computer system like the Macintosh probably seems pretty difficult to the average person. After all, computers are highly complex systems and more than likely most have used PC's in their homes and workplaces for many years. Still, people wonder why they should switch to Mac or if they were to do so, how hard would it be.

The answer is that it wouldn't be nearly as hard as you think. It might even be easy. Macs are, after all, famed for their ease of use. I read recently that Macs were stationed at the crossroads between technology and the humanities. What that means to me is that Macs are designed as elegant tools for knowledge. They make using a computer easy to master.

So, let's look at some of the differences betwen a Mac experience and a PC experience once you buy one.

On the PC side, when I boot up the system the first thing I notice is a bunch of software all over the desktop. These are trial applications...you can try them out then you have to pay. I consider this no more than advertising. My new PC is shilling for several corporations who want to sell me stuff.

Macs never do that. No ads on the desktop.

Secondly, I probably purchased a version of Windows like Vista or XP with my new PC. My computer's hardware is made by one company and its operating system is made by another. For something as technologically advanced as a computer, having the OS and the hardware by provided by different parties seems a bit odd. Would you buy a car built that way? Of course not.

Apple computers are made by one company, hardware and operating system. In this fashion Apple creates an optimum mesh between all components of the computer system.

My new PC has antivirus and antiexploit code installed for free on my computer.

If it didn't, I would have to install it right away or possibly suffer an exploit or other virus disaster. My new Mac has no antivirus and doesn't need it. Millions use their Macs without antivirus provisions and seem to remain safe doing so.

Finally, the Mac looks great. The fonts, the windows, the dock, all have a finished, elegant look. The operating system runs almost flawlessly and complete crashes are practically speaking almost nil. PC's on the other hand have a designed by committee look that, while serviceable, is far from having a cohesive look and feel.

I don't mean to go into every advantage Macs have over PC's, just a few of them. If you want to know more, why not cruise down to a nearby Apple store and see for yourself. Apple puts out all makes and models on display available for any passerby to use and learn on.

Question by fiestyligerwoahman: Should I replace my Mac logic board or buy a new computer? The logic board to my white macbook of 2 years is damaged ( probably because I dropped it twice on the cement freshman year). It has microsoft office (which I need for school) and it's been upgraded to 4 GB of RAM. My college computer services will replace the logic board for $ 470 (includes price of the logic board and labor). Should I just repair my Macbook or buy a new computer. The thing is if I buy a new computer, I would probably buy a dell or HP that is around $ 500-650 without tax. I know these computers are less durable than a Mac. On top of that I'd be getting the minimum accessories on my computer. I also would have to invest in buying virus software and buy Microsoft Office. I think it's better to just repair my Macbook. At least I know it's a durable computer and has everything I need on it already. However, my cousin who works at best buy says it's not worth it and just to buy a new computer. What should I do? Best answer for Should I replace my Mac logic board or buy a new computer?:

I'm pretty sure Apple will swap out the logic board for $ 300.00. Check with them first. As far as longevity, you are better off repairing the MacBook. Macs generally have twice the useful lifespan of PCs (which are generally outdated after 3 years; the DoD has a mandatory 3-year upgrade rule). Your cousin at Best Buy likely has this 3-year PC "rule" in mind - which, of course, does not apply to Macs. My Mom still gets by with her 1999 iMac.

It's unlikely you can replace that motherboard for less than the computer is worth. It's very likely you'll spend $ 400 trying, just to find out there's other damage. Macs aren't that durable. I take care of them for a company and they rarely last as long as the Dells. You can get the regular Macbook in the aluminum case now if you buy the new one. It's a lot tougher than the plastic ones.
