You can grab a GTX 580 for $ 400 on Newegg. It's a good performer, but it consumes a bit more power than AMD's current line-up in the same price range. The 7870 is able to beat the 580 when overclocked.

It needs to produce 2 screens at one so the drain is intense. 1.28GB or less is not going to cut it. People have pulled their hair out when they have a GTX 580 with 1.5GB of VRAM and they have all the power in the world but they smack head on into the VRAM wall and experience lag. It's not performance that it lacks but instead the VRAM needs to be higher with today's games. One last word of warning. SLI and Crossfire have a dirty little secret. The performance is going to be nearly double if you do ever go SLI but that is where the fun ends. Your VRAM will NEVER exceed that of your first card. You buy a card with 1.28GB of GDDR5 VRAM and that's it. There isn't adding another card and getting more VRAM. Nope.
