We converted an ordinary projector screen into an low cost interactive screen using a webcam. This is one of the several applications from our "Interactive Computer Interface using Webcam" proejct. Here's some of the demos used during our project presentation to illustrate our prototype. The projector and screen are ordinary ones like any others in our labs. A webcam is used to detect the presence of any lightspot on the projector screen. A program running on the computer then finds out the position of the lightspot on the screen and uses this info to control the computer's mouse cursor. As shown in the video, our prototype is able to work with the following light pointers: 1. any ordinary laser pointer (ie red light spot) 2. an ordinary pocket torchlight (penlight) 3. specially built infrared lightpen 4. infrared presentation pointer/stick. Our prototype is able to operate most (not all!) standard WinXP applications a nd several video games (more info on other videos). For those with simple power point slide show legacy projectors with a low resolution of 640x480 pixels will do the job perfectly. However, if the presentation in have low-resolution images or animations the host presenter may need to upgrade their computer projector gear to 800x600 pixels to get quality staging. Furthermore, incase one wants their audience to hav e a good movie experience from the high-resolution video that they want to display a 1024x768 pixels computer projector will provide an excellent entertainment for viewers.
There are also a number of compelling reasons for presenters to consider using a computer projector instead of slide or overhead film projectors. Namely, they have professional looks, they display images, videos and data at the same cost, they are stylish and portable and they can present data and audio from the local or online network. What more, they are compatible with both analog and digital electronic media content. Besides this computer projectors also have some draw backs due to their rigid design specifications. For instance, if one wants to get the best out of a computer projector they use for presentation, they must to have specific type of connector to link their computer or media source to the projector. They perform poorly in terms of audio volume. Lastly, it is almost impossible to adj ust the sequence of image clips on the computer projector during presentation without messing around with the media source.
