Cannon make a high quality product. Ink prices are about the same. Canon are designed for photo quality prints so their pigments are a bit more vibrant.

HP puts the print heads in the cartridge. This means you rarely have head clogs because you keep getting new heads, but the cartridges are a lot more expensive which means you can buy a new printer for the extra you pay. But the printer with the best warranty is epson. For a year (2 years for the Artisan) they will fedex you a replacement and pick up the old one at their expense. I had a friend who chose a Canon model. It had to be brought in to the repair center twice the first year. Each time she not only wasted time bringing it there and picking it up, she lost the use of it for a week each time. With an Epson she could have made a phone call and had a replacement the next day. As for ink, Epson uses mostly pigment ink. HP and Canon use some pigment and some dye. Each has advantages and disadvantages.
