Apple and Microsoft: two titans of Silicon Valley, both pioneers in the field of personal computers. But that's where the similarity ends, as there are vast differences between their products.
If you Google the phrase "Mac vs. PC" (forgiving the misnomer if you will, as Macs are also personal computers), you'll come up with thousands, if not millions of articles about which company successfully keeps their customers happy. And that's the point I want to focus on: Which one of these companies keeps their customers happy and strives to put out the best product they are capable of producing?
What most people forget when debating the strengths of these companies' products is that the products are inherently different. Microsoft predominantly produces operating systems and programmes; the most popular of which is Windows. Macintosh, on the other hand, manufactures their own personal computers and, on top of that, sells operating systems, servers, programmes and hardware, such as the iPod.
Many of the complaints from pro-Windows people revolve around the fact that Macs are limited in their ability to be upgraded. And, if you are able to upgrade a Mac, it ends up being a very expensive exercise. Macs themselves are also quite expensive, but one can get older second-hand models for a fair price. On the plus side, Macs are very efficient machines; everything works the way it should (well, most things; I found partitioning my external hard drive to be quite a difficult task). Installing programmes is easy and everything operates on a very user-friendly, double-click and use basis. Most new Mac models have a webcam and microphone installed, along with a decent sound and graphics card.
But this is obviously all hardware and kind of unfair to Microsoft. South Africans also need to note that Apple products are far more expensive here than they are in places like Canada, the UK and US.
Unfortunately, Windows has a reputatio n as a bug-ridden operating system that constantly needs drivers and codecs to be downloaded and installed. Viruses are a big problem if you have an internet connection or regularly use external devices like flash disks. Macs aren't really plagued by viruses (although there have been a few), because, due to their higher price, hackers stick to other PCs.
If you want to write your own software using the Mac OS X programming language, then you'll have to pay for the privilege, and it's not completely user-modifiable like Windows. I think this is a good thing; others disagree. They see Macintosh users as snooty and exclusive. And, some of them are, but so are most people with an internet connection. You only need to look at the flame wars on YouTube videos to see this. Personally I find the Windows interface a little lacking, but some people find that they prefer it. No reason in arguing about opinion there.
What all of this comes down to is what you what you use pe rsonal computer for, and which operating system best suits your needs.
If you are an avid gamer then the Windows platform is definitely for you. You can upgrade cheaply as and when necessary to meet the required specifications of the game you're playing. Games are expensive enough as is, and it's good to be frugal. Also, if you work on websites or do programming, you'll probably find that Windows better suits your needs.
If you work with video editing, sound editing or any image or audio manipulation then a Macintosh is an indispensable tool. You'll find that rendering large files is a lot smoother and crashing happens infrequently.
Decide what purpose your personal computer will serve before purchasing one. Write down a list of things you want to do, and only then make the purchase. That way you'll feel a lot happier with your machine's capabilities.

I need to be able to download and burn movies and music, play computer games, speedy internet, do office work and hold all of my docs and pictures etc. I also need it to be esthetically pleasing, not heavy, compact and easy to travel with. I am having a hard time finding the inside components I want in an outside shell I want. I am a PC user, never used a Mac but am so interested and would use it for work graphic design etc. (do this only sometimes, not trained, but would like to be someday) - just not sure if the Mac is needed quite yet and if I would use it to it's full potential. Also I am in Canada, probably I will make my purchase at Best Buy / Future Shop. No price limit really, just want a light, small laptop with mega insides!! i personally been looking at the hp dm3, it has a alloy frame like the macbook, but you can get one nicely customized between $ 500 to $ 800

i had this question just a few weeks ago, but i got the Dell Inspiron . It's a great laptop with 4gb, webcam, VERY LIGHT (i actually thought it would be heavy) good settings, windows 7, i love the laptop in general. What i don't really like is sometimes the mouse pad freezes but it might be just a glitch, so don't worry about it(: It's a really good laptop and I recommend it. BTW i don't suggest the minis, because they can't play CD's or DVD's and you'll never know when your going to need it. And also they have low capacity and gbs. And as for Macs, i never tried it, their pretty fast, but it's like 1000$ for one when you could buy a good windows for around 500$ ; also some programs can't be installed or cost more on the mac CHEERS ~

You can control what you want to do, very easy, once you know how, There are over 150 free operating systems avaiable to you, All of these operating systems are better than Microsoft and Mac systems they are more secure, faster, stable and virus free. (6) if you want a Mac type operating system then there are several viersion you can pick from like FreeBSD, PC-BSD then there is many version of Linux which is developed by Intel IBM Google and many other high profile IT companies, Then there is free Solaris (Unix operating system) supported and developed by Oracle one of the largest world wide IT companies.
