I have wanted to get my parents a "big" screen TV for quite some time -- I recently saw Panasonic's P65S1 at Best Buy and wast contemplating getting that for them. Unfortunately, none of the Best Buy stores in their area carry this TV and my vehicle is not big enough to transport it 400 miles over a weekend. I did some searching online for alternative vendors and found that there are many that ship Plasma TVs. This was somewhat shocking to me -- I've seen how carriers like UPS and FedEX drop, throw and otherwise abuse parcels. Knowing that Plasma TVs are supposed to be kept "standing up" (in a vertical position) I just couldn't see this ever happening for the duration of the shipping process. Well, I learned that there is another type of shipping -- freight shipping which apparently takes greater care in moving fragile items like Plasma TVs -- so that is how it is done. I found a store online called "B&H Photo Video" which has the Panasonic P65S1, cheaper price than Best Buy and free freight shipping. I think one of my friends ordered a large computer monitor from the same company so I'm fairly certain they are legit. Anyways, for the shipping, they describe it as "Common Carrier - Curbside Delivery". I'm assuming the "Common Carrier" thing is the name for freight shipping? Anyways, my main concern is they say the delivery takes 7-10 days. I would like to be there when the TV arrives so the best day for me would be a Saturday. Do they give you a better estimate of when the delivery will be made? One thing I liked about Best Buy's delivery service is they would let you schedule a time (within a 4 hour block) of when you wanted to receive the TV.... I've nev er used Common Carrier and would like some insight. Also, once the TV arrives, do I have to inspect the contents of the box thoroughly before dismissing the carrier? Do you have any advice? keep in mind the carrier has 75 more stops to make before the end of the day so they won't sit there in the truck while you lug it out of the box . and plasmas are HEAVY easily 100+ lbs. you will need 2 people to bring it in the house. they are very long also. you can always send it back if its broken or not working but you might have to pay $ 150 to freight it back to them. not sure if you ordered it or not but have you ever thought to just buy a 72" DLP instead of a smaller plasma? you will save a good $ 1,000

B&H Photo is a legit company through and through. They cater to more of a professional crowd than "the masses." That is likely why you, and most others, might not hear about them on a regular basis. But they are reliable company to deal with. Never had any experience with Common Carrier myself. I think for the best and most accurate answer you should look for a 1-800 number for B&H Photo customer service. They should have better insight into the process over anyone else. I agree with the other person though. For a 65" set, make sure you have someone else on hand to help out with the lifting and setting up. Its 100% a 2 person job. As for the condition it arrives in. The delivery person is just that, a delivery person. If you have any issues with the condition of the TV, you will have to get on the phone with someone and sort out the solution. Like if Best Buy delivered a busted set, they'd leave it at the house until the store schedule them to take it back (and they'd likely show up with the replacement). If you do have any concerns about the Plasma being tilted during shipping, you might want to consider not turning it on. I know its like bloody murder to have it sitting there and not turn it on. But if you're worried, after your investment, its worth the torture. Just give 24-48 hours to settle in and then fire it up. There's no way for the other Best Buy stores to ship it to you? Have you thought about inquiring about that? I would think the local store could have the TV shipped to them and then ship it out to you. I would certainly at least ask.
