I've always liked the eee pc from Asus. Make sure you get one with an Atom processor and at least a 100 gig harddrive. They only downside to the netbook is that the screen is small and there is no disc drive, but you can find really cheap USB disc drives. Search for one on Ebay or Bestbuy...

Netbook are great for what you just described I would suggest however if you buy one, buy an external drive you may think you don't need it but unless you know how to network your Computers together and share a CD drive (which its pretty obvious you wouldn't know how to do that, no offense) You will have no way to install software that you need. (Like the microsoft Office you will need for writing papers and doing homework)

I use a Toshiba NR-100 11R with Ubuntu instead of Windows as it has Open Office included. And because it runs Ubuntu it uses less resources so don't let its low spec put you off: mine is really fast, plus you'll never get a virus! http://www.pcpro.co.uk/reviews/240423/toshiba-nb10011r.html

Other important points for you to consider are how important battery life is to you, how big of a display you want and what type of operating system you plan to use. If you really want long battery life, I would recommend getting a smaller sized laptop or a netbook. The Acer Aspire One has great battery life and also a 10.1" display. It has enough power to do all of the things that you had listed, as well as the things you would typically need for school / office work.
