Question by andantea09: What is the best computer (mac) for producing music and to record music? Sooooo, I'm in the market for a new Mac. I was leaning toward the iMac 27 inch with 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Core i7. I was also going to go to crucial.com for the memory and install 16 Gigs of ram in it. Now on the flip side, my friends (always there to stir up confusion as they are always the best to advise you to spend YOUR money) say that i should get a Mac Pro. Now of course it doesn't take a genius to figure out why I might not want to get a Mac Pro, the price! Now of course this is the top of the line machine but, will I really need all of this horsepower in a computer. Now I'm using Pro-Tools LE, thinking of converting to Logic, I use a Triton and a Fantom x8. I will also buy the digi 003 rack (or should I spend the extra money on the 003 interface that has the physical mixer). I don't want to deal with latency and having to tweak things just to have a decent session. I don't want to have to worry about my computer taking a dive when I'm using a lot of plug in's. So if any one can advise me, I'd greatly appreciate. So to recap what I'd like to know: 1: What is the best computer for Producing music using Pro-Tools LE, soon to be logic? 2: Is Logic a superior choice to Pro Tools? 3: Do I need to spend the extra money for the 003 rack with the physical mixer, or is there a superior audio interface? 4: Do I NEED to have the horsepower of a Mac Pro? I'm going to give you a bunch of answers that probably aren't what you're looking for but that I think hold fairly true: 1. There is no 'best computer'. You can buy a really good computer and it will likely be obsolete within a few months if not as soon as you buy it. That said, the BETTER computer is one with more cores, a faster processor, and more ram. All of these things will make it run programs faster and more efficiently. You mentioned avoiding latency. While a fast computer will help keep latency low, you will never be able to completely eliminate it. 2. There is no superior DAW. Logic and Pro Tools are both great editing and mixing programs but neither one is better than the other per se. Both do some tasks differently than the other, and if one fits your style better that's the better choice for YOU, but neither is inherently better. 3. Once again, another question that is completely based on personal preference. Some people really really like the feeling of physically moving faders and twisting pots. If that's what you like then the 003 control surface is probably for you. If not, it probably isn't worth a few extra hundred dollars. 4. This kinda goes back to question one. I don't know how huge of sessions your running as far as track count goes, or how many plugins your tacking on and all that. What you need is a computer that can handle what you're doing with it. If you feel that the Mac Pro is overkill then it probably is. Also, don't spend money you don't have ;) -KDecka One last thought - if you're looking to switch to Logic you can probably find an interface for waaaay cheaper than the 003R or 003Mixer. And since you're not locked into Digi hardware anymore, I'd try to save a few bucks there.

The processor speed, and the RAM. The higher you get these numbers, the better it'll run. That iMac 27 inch sounds like it has some pretty amazing specs.
