Refurbished laptop computers offer a decent alternative to buying either brand new or used. There are several advantages over each of those alternatives.
If you are buying refurbished over buying brand new then you are saving on price. In almost all cases, a refurbished laptop will carry the same warranty as a new one, so that should be a strong vote of confidence right there that you are not just throwing your money away into something that might turn into a big problem down the road. If you are considering buying refurbished, make sure that it carries the same warranty as a new model, and if it doesn't, don't buy it.
If you are buying a refurbished machine instead of a used one, you might end up paying just a bit more money, but you are getting the piece of mind that comes from having a warranty with your purchase. If you buy used then it is a complete crap shoot and the machine could conk out on you the next day, and you have no recourse at that point.

Depends what you want out of it. Please specify your needs -- word processing, office work, casual websurfing, chat, casual gaming, intensive gaming, watching movies, video conferencing...and so on. We could suggest all manner of hardware, but the intended purpose (and budget, what's your preferred range, other than something under $ 1000?) needs to be kept in mind first and foremost. Personally, I steer clear from Dell hardware, although many like what they have to offer. Dependable brands that you may not have heard of include ASUS, Acer, and Sager.

A Mac is not decent they are over priced for what thy are, you can bye a top of the range HP. They are good all round and take some abuse, plus a excellent back up service if you ever need it. Do not get a Dell.

well the brands to stay away from: Dell (lower priced) HPs If you are going into an art school, Mac is mostly what they use. Macs are very good for the price, and they do have good customer service. if you dont want a mac, go with ACER. they are reasonably priced and run on the AMD processors. i actually find that the amds are faster and more reliable than the intel processors. Gateways are the medium. theyre ok for everyday use, and can take a beating and are low priced. but they really only last 3 yrs at most. but the drawback.. the costumer service is TERRIBLE. im still battling to get my laptop fixed for something that's under warranty and a manufacturer defect. dells: just stay way from. they are basically dead weight. they re machinery is not good at all and costumer service is terrible too. i have worked on both mac and pc and i do find macs more comfortable to work on. but and acer is a close second, and sonys are good too, but i dont know all the "specs" of them cause i only used it a couple of times. so try: -mac -acer -sony -toshiba -gateway -hp good luck!
