Question by ducatirider: Why doesn't Apple just lower their computer prices? Most people I talk to would prefer to have an Apple computer but they don't get one because they are more expensive. So, why doesn't Apple just lower their prices to match the PC prices? Even if that would mean they break even I'm sure they are making enough through their ipod, iphone and (soon) ipad, to keep them profitable. Their marketing dept is probably convinced that the Apple brand is perceived to be of higher quality, justifying the higher price. If they were to drop prices too low, they're afraid people wouldn't continue to think of them as a premium, higher-quality brand.

Actually, iTunes is a loss leader. As in, they make a loss on it to get profits elsewhere. Apple make products at the price they want to - they go for high end and stats show they get something like 50 or 70% or all computer sales over 1000$ . I'm sure they're happy with the profit they're making from the pro line. Apple don't want to be generic. They want to make computers for a specific kind of person in a specific situation. If you complain about price, you're not in their target market. Simple as.

The hardware inside is alot different for a normal PC, and their laptops are solid state meaning that their is no moving parts. No spinning disk which means alot of money. I've seen good flash harddrive go up to 900 bucks and their only around 800 gb.

Cuz they want to make $ $ $ . This clearly shows they're making a decent profit margin. If they were to reduce it out of the blue, it might trigger a perception that they're afraid they might go under. Or perhaps implying they're desperate or that their product has been of lower qu ality than what was perceived (albeit no argument there). A similar analogy would be of Bose speakers. You get the idea, right?

Apple tried going mass-market in the 90s, and failed miserably, losing profit margins and market share. Why would they drop the price? The purpose of a business is to make money, not grab market share. Sometimes the two go together, but not always. Apple isn't the only company that does this. Seen any new $ 18,000 Lexus' lately?
