Any new laptop (besides some stupid little netbook) is going to be able to do what you need. But some will just be faster than others. For the forensics part - I imagine you will be low level scanning hard drives to recover lost of deleted files. Any computer can do that but the faster the processor and the faster the drive, the faster the job gets done. But since it sounds like you are planning on making a career out of this, the more you spend the better because the higher your specs, the longer it will take to be out dated. I know it's hard to be a strugging college student but your computer is going to be your one and only tool - you don't want to skimp on your tools. That's like a professional mechanic buying tools from the dollar store. Anyway, I feel like I should give you a couple examples. 1. But the thing about that machine is it's pretty damn expensive and it's got some stuff you probably don't need like a sweet video card. You only need expensive video cards for gaming and eye-candy (like 3d effects). It doesn't sound like you have a need for such video power. Also it's got the i7 processor (the top of the line) and 12GB of ram... WOW.. those are great specs if you have the cash. I'd love that machine. 2. You are going to want something with: Intel i5 Processor 4 gigs of RAM (minimum - 6 or 8 would be better) Fast Hard drive (7200 RPM - no slower) and something over 700 gigs of space. 1 or 2 TB's would be even better. you aren't going to care about the video card all that much. Pretty much anything that comes on board will be fine (again, that's only if you aren't a big gamer)
