Clearly you are asking a factual answer to a subjective question. Apple has its advantages, but its not nearly as popular as windows machines. If your not going to use the features that take advantage of what makes a MAC great then don't get one. Truthfully if your looking for day to day computer to check your email and AIM and what not get a cheap gateway or compaq. there are 300-400 computers out there that would serve your purposes I think.

Apple is nice, you are buying the vision of the company and not not paying for a commodity like you would for any other PC manufacturer. If you only want to chat, and surf, and do social networking, messaging, then get a dell, or any laptop at the best buy 399/499 sale they have monthly.... You can purchase online. Apple gives you a clean interface, cutting edge company, and a product which is not so much of a commodity as other PC's. Less software works on it, gamers don't like it, and many people knock it. When you buy an Apple, you are not paying for the item, but are paying a premium for the philosophy behind the company.

I wouldn't have an Apple - but some persons won't have anything else. I prefer the "Wintel" systems with WinXP the O/S of choice. VISTA is a pain because of the extensive hardware required to operate it. I have a decent Dell laptop with a scanner/printer for about $ 700.
