I've had the same computer for a long time now (7 years), and now I'm in the market for a new one. I'm actually considering alot of options, but one of my favorite options gives me the choice between 32gb or 16gb worth of ram. I'm going for a gaming desktop, and price isn't an option since I've been saving up for quite some time now in order to afford the best. So my question is this, should I go for 16gb ram that runs at 1666hz speed, or should I go for the 32gb ram that runs at 1333hz? I would like to know the pros and cons of both, and if the size matters more than the hertz rate. I read somewhere that ram only helps your computer up to a certain amount, and that no matter what games you play, 32gb worth of ram won't all be used. Any input is helpful, thanks! Best answer for 32gb 1333hz ram, or 16gb 1666hz ram?:

Don't waste your money, 8Gb of 1600 is plenty
Answer by Jeff Bright
32, although it runs at a slower speed, you have more power, allowing for multiple gigs of ram to be used at once. its also not a bad drop in speed versus size

Why 16/32GB RAM? I suggest getting 4GB of RAM and spend the rest of the money on something else like a better video card or CPU, or even a SSD. 4GB of RAM is more than plenty for current games.

32 GB ? COME ON.....8 GB 2200 mhz will give better performance that either 16 or 32 GBs of RAM. Don't waste your hard earned bottle caps ( Fallout money currency :)

You probably won't even use 4....get 8 to be safe.

32gb of RAM would just be downright future-proofing. 16gb of RAM is too much. A gaming PC will barely use 4gb. I'd go with 8gb because memory is cheap at the moment. a (2x4gb) kit would do just fine. You'll make use of 8gb of ram if you like to open a lot of webpages and run multiple apps. Having a faster speed will help just a little bit. There are RAM speeds of 1866mhz, 1600mhz, 1333mhz, etc. You won't see a big performance difference between any of them. The higher speed RAM is better suited for overclockers. Processors are optimized to run with RAM at a certain speed. Any more than that certain speed and you won't see much of a performance benefit. The upcoming Bulldozer processors are optimized to DDR3-1866 ram. If you went with DDR3-2133 RAm you wouldn't see a benefit. I'd like to see where you can find a 4x8gb kit of RAM. I've have yet to see any 8gb sticks for the desktop.

Think of RAM like water. Diving head-first into a pool that's too shallow is a very bad idea. Once you get the pool deep enough to not break your neck, additional depth makes very little difference (doesn't hurt, though). Unless you're running specialized programs, 4 GB RAM is enough for the vast majority of PC users, including gamers. That may move upwards in upcoming years now that the 64-bit operating systems are becoming standard, but 8 GB is definitely sufficient. To use 32 GB of RAM, you would need the Professional or Ultimate version of Windows 7 64-bit. Home premium is limited to 16GB by Microsoft.

Since most programs wont use more than 4GB of ram and only the big editing/graphics art programs like Adobe and CAD/CAM can use more, 16 or 32GB of ram is WAY overkill! For most of the work you may do, having more ram may slow your machine down. the AMOUNT of ram only helps in very ram intensive applications..the SPEED of ram only helps when to applications need to change direction quickly. Your best bet is no more than 8GB of DDR3-1600. The lower timing may help a bit too. For general gaming you can use 4-6GB of ram.
