Dell is pretty good, but I personally will never buy one. I'd MUCH rather go with an HP. But your first mistake is going to Walmart to get it... :( Try somewhere better...maybe an electronics store in your area such as Fry's or Best Buy??? Otherwise there's TONS of internet sites that are to be trusted. http://newegg.com http://tigerdirect.com http://bestbuy.com http://radioshack.com If you are using the laptop for school, you shouldn't need anything more then alot of space to save stuff. Graphics and all that fun stuff don't matter in that 15 page essay. ;) ;) Good luck!!!

PCs available at Wal-Mart are crap. They're chosen specifically for their cheapness, and most use only Celeron processors. As for the difference between HP and Dell, overall HP is better assuming the models are equivalent. Dell is cheaper. Both brands have some great models, and both have less than great models. You can get a nice refurbished HP Pavilion DV6Z for around $ 520. You'll have to call around for them, but right now there are several available to HP retailers cheaply. Dell also has numerous student deals that you can take advantage of.
