how mobile are you? it's best to have a desk system and a laptop. if you're always out and about then you may need a laptop. i've found desktops to be more reliable than laptops, and cheaper. if it's being used for work, and on a desk all the time, desktop will be fine. however if you don't know a lot about computers and you're out bargaining for a system do your research, check out prices, and compare. try this and search it to cross reference prices http://www.pricewatch.com/notebooks_no_os/

If you're going to be working on SQL Server, I'd say stick to a desktop with plenty of memory. I've got a 3.4 Ghz Hyper Threading processor and 2GB memory but SQL Server still lags for me. Plus I've also given the community technology preview of SQL Server 2008 a try and that's more hungry for your memory than earlier versions. So best if you get a Core 2 Duo (if you can find a 2nd handed one) or look for P4 with Hyper Threading (should be easier to find), plenty of memory and hard drive space.

If you wanna buy 2nd hand computers feel free to chose what suites you but i prefer: 1)If you're traveling always better to choose Notebook 2)In-home or desktop computer if its for indoor jobs or such having many accessories you want for your computer if you don't always travel i prefer you to use desktop computers because you can simply choose what hardware and accessories you want to install or connect to you're desktop computer because it's better to buy a brand new notebook or laptop because it's lifespan is only maximum to 2 yrs if this exceeded you're lucky.better to buy duo and 3gHz comp and high video card that support all video setting and at least a minimum of 100gb space hard drive if you want to,for better quality choose a used computer that does not long for a year because electronics always have an newer model nowadays,buy high quality and high specs computer even touhg its cheap but not a trash.thank you

Build your own. And install open source operating system. I recommend Ubuntu 8.04 LTS. Go to Pricewatch.com to get an idea about your components and prices. Get a book like Building your own PC for Dummies. Use AMD Processer chip and Asus motherboard. This will save you a lot of money. Use dual core processer chip. AMD 64x2 4800+ at least. Asus M2N SLI Deluxe Motherboard. Antec PC case model #NSK6580 PS included. Have Fun.
